Sergeant Major Benjamin M. Britt enlisted in the Marine Corps on June 13, 1994 and completed basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, California. After completing Marine Corps Communications Electronic School in Twenty Nine Palms, California, he was assigned the military occupation specialty of field wireman.
In November 1994, Private First Class Britt reported to the 2d Battalion, 2d Marine Regiment, Camp Lejeune, N. C. During this tour he fulfilled duties as training noncommissioned officer and platoon sergeant. In June 1996 he was deployed with the 22nd MEU to the Mediterranean Sea for a six month period. During this time the MEU was in support of Operations Joint Endeavor, Assured Response, and Quick Resolute. In June 1998 he deployed again with the 22nd MEU in support of Operation Resolve Resolute. During that assignment from November 1994 to January 1999 he was subsequently promoted to lance corporal, corporal (Meritoriously), and sergeant.
In June 1999, Britt was transferred to Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, South Carolina, for Drill Instructor School. Upon completion of DI school he was assigned to 1st Battalion Alpha Company as a drill instructor. During this assignment he trained eight platoons and served as a drill instructor, senior drill instructor, series gunnery sergeant, operations chief and acting first sergeant. During that assignment he was subsequently promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant in March 2001.
In June 2002, Britt upon completion of Drill Instructor Duty, he was assigned to the 2nd AAV Battalion, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, as the battalion wire chief and the platoon sergeant. In February 2003, the entire battalion was deployed to Iraq for a period of six months in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. In September 2004, Britt was promoted to the rank of gunnery sergeant.
In October 2004, Britt reported to 2nd Marine Regiment, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, for duty as the regimental wire chief. During this time the regiment was deployed to Operation Iraqi Freedom II for a one year deployment. While in Iraq the Regiment conducted over 15 major operations and was in support of 10 different units. Upon the return from OIF II, Britt was assigned as the acting headquarters company first sergeant for a three month period.
In June 2006, Britt reported to Marine Corps Communication Electronic School, for duty in Twenty Nine Palms, California. During this tour he fulfilled duties as a chief instructor for the Unit Level Circuit Switch Course. He completed five classes and trained over 90 students. In March 2007, he transferred to the company office as the company gunnery sergeant. Britt was promoted to the rank of first sergeant and was assigned as the 1st Sgt. for Bravo Company, Marine Corps Communication Electronic School in Jan. 2009 until June 1, 2009. Britt then transferred to Headquarters Company, Marine Corps Communication Electronic School.
In December of 2009, Britt received orders to 2 Battalion, 7th Marines, as the company 1st Sgt. for Fox Company. In January 2010, 2/7 was deployed and attached to the 31st MEU, where they participated in Exercises Cobra Gold and Balikatan. After 12 months with Fox Company Britt was transferred to the Remain Behind Company awaiting orders.
In July of 2011, Britt received orders to Weapons Field Training Battalion, Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, at which time he took over Field Training Company. During this time his company was responsible for Crucible operations, the repel tower, gas chamber, and basic warrior training. In March 2012, Britt was reassigned to Headquarters and Service Company.
In December 2013, Britt was promoted to the rank of sergeant major and assigned as the Sergeant Major for Recruiting Station Columbia, South Carolina.
Upon his completion of recruiting duty. Sergeant Major Britt received orders in March 2017 to VMFA-115. During this tour of duty the Squadron went on several detachments to include a deployment to Bahrain in support Operation Inherit Resolve and was attached to SPMAGTF 18.2 to support combat operations.
Upon completion of VMFA-115 Sergeant Major Britt received orders in September 2018 to Weapons Field Training Battalion. Where he is currently the Battalion Sergeant Major.
Sergeant Major Britt's personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal with gold star, Navy Commendation Medal with gold star, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with two gold stars, and the Combat Action Ribbon with one gold star. SgtMaj Britt is married to Christine Britt formerly Christine Baxter of South Port, North Carolina. They have a three son’s named Austin, Brice and Christian.
