Lt. Col. Ty Kopke enlisted in the Marine Corps on Dec. 11, 1992, and shipped to Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island in August 1993 for recruit training. He graduated from Mike Company, 3rd Recruit Training Battalion, on Nov. 22, 1993.

After attending Marine Combat Training at Camp Geiger, Pfc. Kopke attended military occupational specialty school at Ft. Lee, Va. His first duty assignment was with Engineer Maintenance Company, 3rd Maintenance Battalion, 3rd Force Service Support Group, in Camp Foster, Okinawa, Japan, from April 1994 until June 1996. Sgt. Kopke was selected for the Marine Corps Enlisted Commissioning Education Program and transferred to the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps unit at the University of Oklahoma. Kopke earned an undergraduate degree in Construction Science and was commissioned a second lieutenant on May 5, 2000.

Kopke graduated from The Basic School with Echo Company in January 2001. He then attended the Aircraft Maintenance Officer Course at Naval Air Station Pensacola, Fla., graduating in May 2001. His first duty assignment after graduating was with Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron-29 at Marine Corps Air Station New River, N.C., as the ground support equipment division officer. He then transferred to Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron-269 for duties as the maintenance material control officer. He supported multiple exercises, deployments for training, and deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom until July 2003. He then returned to MALS-29 for duties as the Airframes Division Officer, Aviation Life Support Systems Division Officer, and the Assistant Aircraft Maintenance Officer.

1st Lt. Kopke then requested orders to Parris Island for duties as a series officer. In 2004, he returned to Mike Company, 3rd Recruit Training Battalion, where he served four cycles as a series commander before being selected as the assistant director of Drill Instructor School. Capt. Kopke served two years at Drill Instructor School before transferring to MALS-31 in 2007. He was assigned as the assistant aircraft maintenance officer and was an individual augment for both a military transition team and for Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa as the global force manager.

In 2010, Kopke was selected as the Marine officer instructor at the University of Texas. During his tour, he augmented Officer Candidates School as a company commander, was the operations officer for CORTRAMID West and commissioned nearly 30 naval officers. In 2013, Major Kopke returned to MALS-29 and served as the operations officer and executive officer until June 2016. He then transferred to Parris Island a third time and assumed the duties as the 4th Recruit Training Battalion executive officer before assuming his present position as the director of Drill Instructor School.

Lt. Col. Kopke’s decorations include the Joint Service Commendation Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with three gold stars, the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with two gold stars, and the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal with bronze star.

Kopke is married and has three children.
