Sgt. Maj. Wesley C. Carter

Sergeant Major Wesley C. Carter currently serves as the Second Recruit Training Battalion Sergeant Major.  Has performed in this capacity since 30 April 2021.   Sergeant Major Carter graduated from Harrisonburg High School in 1999.  On 23 July 2001 he reported to Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, South Carolina and graduated recruit training 19 October 2001. He was then transferred to Aviation Operations Specialist School in Meridian, MS., and completed 8 weeks of Aviation Operations Specialist training.

In March of 2002, PFC Carter was transferred to Marine Wing Support Squadron 171, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, Okinawa, Japan. He served as a Flight Clearance clerk at the Station Flight Clearance. In December of 2002, LCpl Carter was promoted meritoriously to the rank of Corporal.

In February of 2003, Cpl Carter was transferred to Marine Aircraft Group 16, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, San Diego, CA. While at MAG-16, he served as Operations NCO and Assistant Operations Chief. In August 2004, Cpl Carter deployed with the MAG-16 HQ to Operation Iraqi Freedom 2. In February 2006, he deployed again with MAG-16 HQ to OIF 5-7, and was promoted combat meritoriously to the rank of Sergeant.

In October of 2006, Sgt Carter reported to Drill Instructor School, Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, CA. He graduated and reported to Second Recruit Training Battalion, Golf Company, where was promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant. He served as Drill Instructor, Senior Drill Instructor, and Chief Drill Instructor for a total of ten cycles.

In December 2010, SSgt Carter was transferred to Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 465, Marine Aircraft Group 16, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, San Diego, CA. He served as the Operations Chief and Squadron Gunnery Sergeant.  SSgt Carter then attended the Career Course on Camp Pendleton and graduated class 04-10.

In May 2011, SSgt Carter was transferred to Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron 152, Marine Aircraft Group 36, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, Okinawa, Japan.  In October 2011, he attended the Air Force NCO Academy for E-6 equivalent joint PME.  He was promoted meritoriously to the rank of GySgt in April 2012. He filled the various billets of Operations Chief, Equal Opportunity Representative, Substance Abuse Control Officer, and Fitness Advisor for the Squadron.  GySgt Carter graduated Advanced Course 5-12 as a distinguished graduate and received the physical fitness award.  GySgt Carter attended the Martial Arts Instructor Trainer Course and earned his 2nd Degree.

In May 2014, GySgt Carter was transferred to Marine Aircraft Group 11, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, San Diego, CA.  He filled the billets of Operations Chief, Unit Victim Advocate, Chief Martial Arts Instructor Trainer, and Headquarters First Sergeant for MAG-11.

In January 2016, First Sergeant Carter was transferred to 1st Marine Division, Headquarters Battalion, Truck Co.  He served as the Company First Sergeant. 

In April 2018, First Sergeant Carter received PCA orders to 1st Reconnaissance Battalion, Headquarters and Service Co.  He filled the billet of Company First Sergeant.

In October 2019, First Sergeant Carter received TAD orders to 1st Battalion 5th Marines, Cherokee Company.  He served as the Cherokee Boat Company First Sergeant while deployed with Battalion Landing Team 1/5, 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit.

In July 2020, First Sergeant Carter returned from being TAD to 1st Reconnaissance Battalion, Force Reconnaissance Company.  He served as the Company First Sergeant.

In March 2021, First Sergeant Carter was frocked to his current rank of Sergeant Major on the 19th day with PCS orders to Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island to serve as the Second Recruit Training Battalion Sergeant Major.

His personal awards include the Navy/Marine Corps Commendation Medal (4) and Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal (3).
