Biography

Director, Drill Instructor School
Maj. Jonathan B. Bush

Major Bush was born in Athens, Georgia in 1983. A native of Beaufort, SC, he graduated from Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, Virginia in 2006 receiving a BA in English. The following year, he received a commission in the United States Marine Corps. Following completion of The Basic School and Field Artillery Officer Basic Course, he was assigned to 3d Battalion, 11th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division where he served as a Guns Platoon Commander and Artillery Liaison Officer for Battery L.

 

In 2009 he served as a Forward Observer for Company F, 2nd Battalion, 3d Marines, 3d Marine Regiment and deployed to Golestan, Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom from May 2009 to November 2009. In 2010, Lieutenant Bush served as the Executive Officer for Battery M, Battalion Landing Team 1st Battalion, 7th Marines, for the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit from June 2010 to January 2011.

 

In June 2011, he reported to 3d Recruit Training Battalion at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, South Carolina where he was promoted to Captain. From 2011 to 2013, he served as a Series Commander and Company Executive Officer for Company L. In 2013, Captain Bush transferred to Headquarters and Service Battalion and served as a G-3 Operations Officer and the Officer-In-Charge of base visits.

 

In 2014, Captain Bush was selected to attend the Expeditionary Warfare School in Quantico, Virginia. After graduating in 2015, Captain Bush received orders to 1st Battalion, 12th Marine Regiment. Captain Bush assumed duties as the Battalion Fire Support Officer for 1st Battalion, 3d Marines and deployed in support of the Unit Deployment Program from December 2015 to June 2016. In July of 2016, Captain Bush took command of Battery B, 1st Battalion, 12th Marines. In April 2017, he was selected as the Aide-de-Camp for the Deputy Commander, Marine Forces, Pacific. In February 2018, he was promoted to major.

 

In June of 2018, Major Bush reported to Marine Corps Detachment, Fort Sill, Oklahoma. He served as the Operations Officer until April 2019, where he was then assigned as the Officer in Charge of the Officer Instruction Branch, overseeing both Marine Artillery Officer Basic Course and the U.S. Army Field Artillery Basic Officer Leadership Course. In June of 2020, Major Bush served as a Small Group Instructor for the U.S. Army Field Artillery Captains Career Course.

 

In July 2021, Major Bush reported to 2nd Battalion, 11th Marines at Camp Pendleton for duties as the Battalion S-4. In May 2022 he was assigned as the Battalion Executive Officer. In February 2023 he deployed to Camp Xiphos, Jordan as a Future Operations Planner within the J35 Future Operations Section in support of Combined Special Operations Joint Task Force – Levant. He redeployed in August 2023 and reported to the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit and he served as the Fires and Effects Coordinator for Valiant Shield 2024.

 

In August 2024, Major Bush reported to Second Recruit Training Battalion where he served as the Executive Officer. In May 2025, Major Bush was selected as the Director of Drill Instructor School – East where he currently serves.

 

Major Bush’s professional military education includes Marine Corps Command and Staff College (non-resident), Expeditionary Warfare School (resident), and the Basic School. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in English from Randolph-Macon College. Major Bush’s personal decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with two gold stars, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with combat distinguishing device and one gold star, the Combat Action Ribbon, and the Marine Corps Drill Instructor Ribbon.
