Parris Island releases list of services affected by government shutdown

The following Parris Island facilities and services that affect local service members, civilian employees, retirees, military families and visitors have been closed or suspended indefinitely as a result of the government shutdown, which began Oct. 1, 2013.

-Movie Theater
-Tram Service for Family Day and Graduation
-Tuition Assistance Programs
-Sports Programs
-Bowling Alley
-Auto Hobby Shop
-Brig & Brew
-Recreational Gear Issue
-Marine Corps Family Team Building Programs
-New Parent Support Program
-Personal & Professional Development Program

Recruit training, to include Family Day and graduation events, will continue as scheduled.

All active duty military personnel, including recruits, and "excepted" civilian employees, such as emergency responders, will continue to work and receive wages, while many civilian government employees have been placed on furlough. Where necessary, Marines and sailors are stepping in to ensure the impact to Parris Island remains minimal.

Of the currently 442 civilian employees on Parris Island, 291 have been placed on furlough.
