A native of central Florida, Colonel Matthew D. Bain graduated from The Citadel in 1999 with a degree in computer science and was commissioned a second lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps.
After completion of The Basic School and the Logistics Officer's Course, he reported to 2d Tank Battalion at Camp Lejeune, NC in 2000. While assigned to 2d Tanks, Colonel Bain served first as the assistant battalion logistics officer, the motor transport platoon commander, and deployed to Iraq for Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF).
From 2003-2005, Colonel Bain attended the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA, where he graduated with distinction, earning a master's degree in operations research. He was subsequently assigned to Headquarters Marine Corps in Washington, DC where he served as a logistics operations analyst for the Deputy Commandant for Installations and Logistics.
In 2007, Colonel Bain received a temporary assignment as the logistics officer for 3rd Battalion, 23rd Marine Regiment and deployed to Haditha, Iraq for OIF 06-08.
In 2008, Colonel Bain was assigned to Marine Wing Support Squadron 271 at Cherry Point NC as the squadron logistics officer and Headquarters and Service Company Commander.
In 2009, Colonel Bain deployed again to Iraq with the squadron and was assigned as the Aviation Ground Support Detachment Commander at Al Taqaddum Airfield. After redeployment he became the squadron operations officer.
In late 2010, Colonel Bain was assigned as the executive officer and operations officer for Security Cooperation Task Force Southern Partnership Station 2011 which leveraged core Marine Wing Support Squadron capabilities.
In 2011, the Task Force deployed to the Caribbean aboard the USS Gunston Hall and conducted security cooperation events in Colombia, Guatemala, and Belize. Upon returning, Colonel Bain received orders to the Naval War College, Newport, RI where he graduated with distinction in 2012 receiving a master's degree in national security and strategic studies.
Colonel Bain was subsequently assigned to the Logistics Strategy and Programs Office, United States Central Command, in Tampa, FL where he also served as the executive officer for the Central Command J4.
After a successful joint tour, Colonel Bain became the operations officer for the Chemical Biological Incident Response Force in Indian Head, MD where he coordinated support to nine National Special Security Events, directly serving as a task force commander for the 2016 State of the Union, the 2016 Democratic National Convention, and the 2017 Presidential Inauguration.
After leaving Maryland, Colonel Bain commanded Marine Wing Support Squadron 272 at Marine Corps Air Station, New River NC from June 2017 to June 2019, and his unit was named the Marine Corps' Marine Wing Support Squadron of the year.
In July 2019, Colonel Bain reported to The Pennsylvania State University as a Logistics Fellow graduating with a Master of Supply Chain Management degree.
In August 2020, he assumed duties as the executive officer of the Marine Corps Logistics Operation Group, Marine Air Ground Task Force Training Command in Twenty-nine Palms, California.
After being selected for promotion to Colonel, Colonel Bain was assigned to be the Assistant Chief of Staff, Installation Support (G-4) for Marine Air Ground Task Force Training Command in May 2021.
In August 2023, he was assigned as Assistant Chief of Staff, G-4, Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island before assuming command of Headquarters and Service Battalion.
